According to recent data released to Footprint by the Paper Cup Recovery and Recycling Group, only around 6% of recyclable coffee cups are actually being recycled. So, while you may think “it’s just one cup”, the effect may be greater than you realise. Many coffee shops offer discounts when you bring your own cup as a way to incentivise this much needed swap.
Sourcing your coffee locally not only supports your local community but also reduces the number of miles it (and you) has to travel. Get researching local coffee roasters!
The standard pod coffee machine creates on average 10 times the amount of solid waste than a drip coffee maker. While brands are creating return and recycle incentives for their pods, by using a French Press or V60 the leftover ground coffee is fully recyclable (can be used to fertilise indoor plants).
